Description
The story of CASK 23 began during the harvest of 1974. Back then, the winery enlisted the help of celebrated winemaker André Tchelistcheff. As he tasted through various lots of new wines from that year, one lot from S.L.V. was so beautiful and deliciously distinct the winery decided it should be bottled separately. It was named CASK 23 for the large wooden cask in which it was aged. Today, the wine is a blend of the most distinctive fruit from the S.L.V and FAY vineyards, resulting in a wine of extraordinary depth and richness balanced by restraint. Over the years, CASK 23 has become one of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 ratchets up the level of complexity, richness and density. Magnificent floral notes intermix with blueberry, blackberry and cassis, and there is no hint of new oak. A full-bodied opulence on the palate, great purity and personality make for a prodigious example of Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 30+ years. Kudos to Stags Leap Wine Cellars. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Caks 23 is quite simply one of the wines of the vintage. Crème de cassis, inky blue/purplish fruit, menthol, licorice and dark spices are some of myriad aromas and flavors that open up as the Cask 23 makes its presence noted. Huge and massively tannic, the 2013 Cask captures all the personality of this great vintage, along with darker shades of expression that recall the S.L. V. If anything, the Cask tastes like S.L.V. on steroids. What a wine!RP 99 | Robert Parker |
